Jude Okoye keeps mum over Psquare break-up
Ademola Olonilua and Eric Dumo
Ever since the news of the break-up of
Psquare broke, fingers have been pointing to two people in the family;
Peter and Jude Okoye. Yours truly, Saturday Beats reached out
to Jude via a telephone call after he refused to reply text messages but
immediately he was told the call was from Saturday Beats, he
disconnected it rudely even though there had been contacts with him
before the break-up saga.
Although the Okoye family has not
categorically stated that Psquare has split, going by the feeler the
twin brothers, Peter and Paul, are putting out, it seems the end has
come to the brand known as Psquare. Early in the week, Peter unveiled
his new management team, with a new manager, which means his elder
brother Jude, would no longer be managing his affairs.
He had a solo performance in Abuja, released a new song, Look Into My Eyes, and also changed his stage name to Mr. P.
Paul on the other hand has asked to be called Rudeboy. He also released an emotional song, Call Heaven, in which he sings his heart out, evoking the memory of his late parents on the happenings in the Okoye household.
In a reaction to the group’s split, Nigerians also took to Twitter with the hashtag #Psquare to voice their opinion.
A Nigerian twitter user with the handle
@mackzii, suggested that the brothers need a time out together and
alone. She tweeted, “Peter and Paul Okoye need to go somewhere, no
internet, no gadget, just the two of them. They need time alone.”
Another twitter user, @igono, voiced the
concern of many Nigerians about the value of both twin brothers
pursuing solo careers. He tweeted, “I’m a big fan of Psquare, not Peter
or Paul.”
User @nze007 also asked the brothers if
they remember a line from their song where they said Peter and Paul are
one and not two individuals. The user tweeted, “Wonder if Peter and Paul
still remember their famous line, ‘Peter and Paul dem be one no be
two.’”
On a flip side, some Nigerians have found humour in the situation.
@temiswift_ tweeted, “If Psquare can
break up and still be fine, nobody should lament about a broken
relationship when your partner isn’t your twin.”
Another twitter user, @pervrocker
tweeted, “Someone that has been looking for an excuse to break up will
just use Psquare. I have to break up with you. Why? Psquare broke up, it
is a sign.”
Others are blaming one of the brothers’ wives for the break-up.
Their insinuations may not be farfetched
as it should be recalled that Jude Okoye was not present at the wedding
ceremony of his brother, Peter even though he was in town. Many have
speculated that this was what led to the crack in the relationship among
the brothers.
@osimomento is one of those who feel
that a woman has something to do with the brothers going their separate
ways. He tweeted, “If Psquare can break up, then understand the power of
a bad wife.”
Widow butchered in Delta community, suspect nabbed
PALPABLE tension has continued to mount
in Oki-Agbor community in Delta State following the gruesome murder of a
48-year-old widow, Mrs. Nkemelem Dorothy Onahor, by suspected
assassins.
Though the police in Agbor have arrested
the prime suspect identified as Christian (surname withheld) and two
other persons, the killing of the widow has continued to create ripples
within the Agbor community and its environs.
Police image maker in the state, Mrs.
Celestina Kalu, who spoke with journalists in Asaba on Tuesday, said the
suspects would be charged to court on completion of investigation,
adding that more arrests would be made.
A source at the Oki community, Mr. John
Ogbeide, said late Mrs. Onahor was on her way to Oke community to attend
a burial ceremony in her late husband’s family compound when the
suspected assassins attacked and took her life.
It was gathered that the prime suspect
(Christian) had waited for two days at particular spot for the victim,
knowing that she would be attending a burial ceremony and attacked her
with machetes.
Christian had earlier smashed her car
windscreen, forcing the woman to alight from her car to ask for the
reason for the aggressive act.
It was further gathered that the prime
suspect and the late husband of the woman hailed from the same Oki
community and were friends.
Delta State Police Public Relations
Officer, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, said the suspect, after dismembering the
victim, assembled her parts into the booth of her Camry Car.
Kalu pointed out that it was at the
point of driving the car away from the crime scene that the suspect was
stopped for interrogation by motorcyclists operating within the area.
Sources explained that after
questioning, the motorcyclists saw parts of the body of the woman in the
booth and handed the suspect over to the police.
Meanwhile, angry youths in Oki community
on Monday assembled at Chirstian’s house where they allegedly set his
belongings ablaze.
Woman breaks eight-year-old son’s head for fleeing house
The Lagos State Police Command has
arrested a woman, identified only as Mary, for allegedly fracturing the
head of her eight-year-old son.
The son, Samuel, was punished for leaving the house without permission and going to a neighbour’s place.
Our correspondent gathered that Mary,
who lived on Furniture Avenue, Jakande Estate Gate in the Isolo area of
the state, allegedly hurled a stone at Samuel which broke his head.
Angry neighbours were said to have
attempted to mob Mary before the arrival of policemen from the Isolo
Police Division, who took the woman away, while Samuel was rushed to a
government hospital.
PUNCH Metro gathered that on Friday, at about 1pm, Mary, who worked as a lotto agent, had returned and did not meet Samuel at home.
She was said to have met the boy in a
neighbour’s place and attempted to flog him. While Samuel ran, the
mother allegedly picked a stone and hurled it at the boy. The stone hit
the boy’s head, damaging his head.
When our correspondent got to Furniture
Avenue, a resident who gave his name simply as Salami, said the
neighbours initially administered a first aid on Samuel before the
arrival of the policemen, who arrested Mary.
He said, “We were attracted on Friday by
the cries of the boy. What angered most people was the belief that Mary
was hostile to the boy. He dropped out of school last year and has not
been attending any school.
“When I got to the scene, the boy’s
shirt was stained with blood. Blood was also coming out from his head.
The mother explained that she had warned him to stay at home. But when
she came back, she could not find him. That made her angry.
“We initially administered first aid on
the boy, and when he was stable, he was rushed to a general hospital. We
then invited the police.”
A neighbour, identified only as Mama
Ada, said Samuel was Mary’s only child, adding that the boy’s father had
separated from Mary.
She said, “Mama Sam (Mary) did not
deliberately break her son’s head. The boy’s father had divorced her
since last year, and he did not send any money for the upkeep of the
boy. Samuel dropped out of school last year.
“The mother does not have a good job.
Her fault was that she was too hard on the boy by hitting him with a
stone. But she is now remorseful.”
One of the residents was said to have also reported the matter to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team.
The DSVRT was said to have got across to the Ministry of Youth and Social Development which sent an official to the area.
The Coordinator, DSVRT, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the ministry had taken custody of the injured boy.
She said, “The government has rescued
the boy from his mother. The Child Protection Unit of the Ministry of
Youth and Social Development was contacted, and a social worker was
dispatched to rescue the boy.
“The boy’s father is no longer with the
mother. The man has shown up at the police station, where he confessed
that he was unable to financially look after the victim. The social
worker subsequently took the child to a shelter until when he would be
reunited with his family.
“The incidence of child abuse is on the
increase. We, however, commend members of the public who report such
cases. They will be treated with utmost confidentiality.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP
Dolapo Badmos, said she would get back to our correspondent on the
incident. But she had yet to get back as of press time.
Suspected Cameroon bomber not from Chibok
The Chibok Community in Abuja on Tuesday
said the suspected female suicide bomber that was arrested in Cameroon
was not from their community, based on information made available to
them by the Federal Government.
The Chairman of the community, Tsambido
Abana, told our correspondent on Tuesday that the suspect had never
attended a conventional school, noting that the minor, who does not
speak English, was believed to be from Bama area of Borno State.
Asked if his group had seen the girl’s
picture, Abana stated that it was not released to him or his community
members, adding that the picture was given to Aisha Oyebode of Murtala
Muhammed Foundation for verification.
He said he would not approach the
foundation for the picture, noting that it was clear that the girl was
not from Chibok, fbased on the information released by the government.
“I won’t bother to go and see the
picture, because from the information given by the government, it is
apparent that the girl is not from Chibok. Going to see the picture
would create an unnecessary tension and expectation among the Chibok
parents whose daughters are missing,” he said.
The BringBackOurGirls group also said it
had not seen the picture of the suspect, saying it (picture) was not
made available to them.
A co-coordinator of the group, Aisha Yesufu, said the government did not release any picture to the group.
The BBOG had earlier advised the
government to authenticate the suspect’s claim that she was one of the
abducted 219 Chibok girls.
Kanye West apologizes to Beck, Bruno Mars
Kanye West is on an apology spree.
In a series of tweets, West reached out to singers Beck and Bruno Mars to express remorse over his well-documented disses.
"I would like to publicly apologize to Beck. I'm sorry Beck," West tweeted Thursday night.
Beyonce backer
West turned heads -- and not in a good way when he briefly went on stage after Beck won a Grammy for Album of the Year. In an interview after the show this month, West asked Beck "to respect artistry" and give the award to Beyonce.
Though
West did not grab Beck's microphone like he's done in the past, his
brief stunt was similar to a 2009 incident when he stormed the stage
during the VMAs and declared Beyonce should have won an award instead of
Taylor Swift.
West and Swift appeared to put it behind them, hugging it out at this month's Grammys.
Bruno props
Bruno Mars got more than an apology Thursday.
"I used to hate on him but I really respect what he does as an artist," West tweeted.
West then asked him to sing a hook on a song that he co-produced.
There was no immediate response from Bruno Mars or Beck.
Fayose, threat to national security –APC
The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti
State has accused Governor Ayodele Fayose of conducting himself in a
manner that threatens national security.
It said the governor’s recent utterances
and actions suggested acts of sabotage targeted at rendering national
institutions ineffective to perform their statutory roles for effective
government.
The state Publicity Secretary, Taiwo
Olatunbosun, said in a statement on Monday that Fayose’s unguided
statements had exposed him as a man fighting a lone battle against the
Federal Government.
He alleged that Fayose was nursing
selfish motives to put millions of Nigerians in jeopardy of instability
in an already tottering economy.
“We have heard of reports of Governor
Fayose inciting the people to stone the operatives of the DSS anywhere
they are seen. This is besides saying many unprintable things about the
President (Muhammadu Buhari), such as saying that he would soon die and
declaring the Director General of DSS, Lawal Musa Daura, person non
grata in Ekiti State.
“It is regrettable that Fayose cannot
separate his personal views as a man constantly at war with the Nigerian
law from the views of lawful Ekiti people, who are ready to submit
themselves to the Nigerian law where the rule of law and good governance
flourish,” he said.
Accusing the governor of running a
government built on his personal image, the APC spokesman said this
misconception had “robbed Ekiti people the quality leadership with the
right mindset to see governance beyond the prism of self-glorification.”
“This failure to see governance beyond
personal appeal of the governor has cost our state good governance for
the development of our people and her deserved place of honour in this
country.
“Governor Fayose is overwhelmed with
promoting cloudy characters, with several alleged crimes hanging on
their necks far above Ekiti academic pride of the century, Ayodele Dada,
who bagged the best graduating student award at the University of Lagos
with a record 5.0 GPA.
“We are not surprised at the governor’s
beatification of crime in this instance, because you can only give what
you have and gold is usually sold to the person who knows its value.
That is why Fayose would prefer to celebrate thugs and roughnecks to
celebrating Ekiti golden boy that has put Ekiti State on the map of
academic honour at the University of Lagos.”
Olatunbosun urged Nigerians not to be
misled by Fayose’s many lies against the agencies of government in the
prosecution of alleged crimes by him and his supporters, regretting that
many Nigerians with scant knowledge of the governor’s politics had been
deceived into believing the stories of an alleged invasion of the House
of Assembly by the DSS to abduct the lawmakers.
“Besides suborning the staff of the
Assembly to lie against the DSS by presenting purported spent bullets,
there is no evidence to show the world that the DSS actually invaded
Ekiti House of Assembly after police report on the matter and evidence
by workers proved that there was no invasion of the Assembly by the
DSS,” Olatunbosun explained.
He urged security agencies to pay more
attention to the governor by putting him under close watch to forestall
his threat to Buhari’s government.
But reacting through his Chief Press
Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said he would not take issue with the
APC since President Buhari had personally apologised to Nigerians over
his “inadequacies.”
He said, “And we told him (Buhari) he
should go beyond mere apology and address the lapses and provide
sensible, responsible government and dividend of democracy to Nigerians
who voted for him.
“The Ekiti State APC is crying more than
the bereaved. Governor Fayose has no apology for criticising obnoxious
policies of President Buhari. The statement of the APC has proved the
collaboration between the DSS and the APC. Or at what point does the APC
become the spokesperson and defender for the DSS? The APC and DSS are
toothless and reckless.”
Herdsmen vs Farmers clashes
Members of the Benue Parliamentary
Caucus at the House of Representatives on Monday again opposed calls for
the creation of grazing routes across the federation as a solution to
the unceasing clashes between herdsmen and farmers.
They said population explosion over time
had made grazing routes a useless option in the face of the limited
land available to farmers.
Lives and valuable property are being
lost in parts of the country owing to frequent clashes between armed
Fulani herdsmen and farmers.
In the latest attacks in Agatu Local
Government Area of Benue State, over 500 lives were reportedly lost,
while thousands of villagers were displaced from their homes and turned
to refugees in tents and community school premises.
The leader of the caucus, Mr. Orker Jev, told The PUNCH in
Abuja that some 50 and 60 years ago, it was possible to create grazing
routes for cows because the country’s population was small, adding that
people did not consider such routes an issue.
He noted that in 2016, with Nigeria’s
population estimated to be “over 170 million,” there were more people
occupying limited land for agricultural purposes.
The caucus argued that the grazing
routes would only be a “time bomb” as the question would arise as to who
would give up his land for the cattle routes.
Orker, who is also the Chairman, House
Committee on Rules/Business, added, “The population explosion that we
have here has not expanded the land that people are living on.
“Population has been growing, but the land remains the same; no addition.
“Grazing routes were conceivable 50 or
60 years back, but you cannot talk the same way today because we have
more people and less land today. Now, where will the grazing routes be?”
The caucus called on the federal and
state governments to introduce a “policy on ranching,” whereby every
cattle owner must have a ranch for his or her cows.
It stated that with ranches, the cows
would be restricted to a particular location where grazing facilities
could be provided for them all year round against the current practice
of allowing them to stray into farms and destroy crops.
“The best solution is that cattle owners
should build ranches; ranch your cows so that they will not go about
destroying other people’s means of livelihood,” Orker said.
He also urged the Federal Government to
beef up security at Nigeria’s porous borders to prevent strangers from
moving in and out of the country at will.
Orker explained that this had become
imperative as there were suspicions that some of the attackers might be
“hired mercenaries,” who could easily blend with the local Fulani
herdsmen in Nigeria.
He said, “Several resolutions were
reached at meetings between Benue and neighbouring states, but the
herdsmen will always deny that they know the attackers. If what they are
saying is true, my thinking is that perhaps, we have foreigners in our
midst.
“They are taking advantage of the porous
borders to cross in and out of the country to cause damage. So, we must
address the issue of our borders. For now, most of these killers may
not be Nigerian Fulani and it is dangerous to have such people in your
domain.”
Meanwhile, a traditional ruler in Ogun
State, the Onijoun of Ijoun in the Yewa North Local Government Area, Oba
Razaq Adewusi, has appealed to the federal and state governments, to,
as a matter of urgency, rescue his people from the menace of Fulani
herdsmen, who have been wreaking havoc on the residents of the area.
He said the herdsmen had not only
destroyed farms and stored farm produce such as yam, maize, cocoa,
cashew and coffee plantations, they had resorted to armed robbery and
raping women.
‘Tinubu’s contribution to Buhari presidency unequalled’
The Osun State chapter of the All
Progressives Congress has said the contribution of the National Leader
of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to the emergence of President
Muhammadu Buhari is unequalled.
Congratulating Tinubu on his 64th
birthday, the Osun State chapter of the APC said the former Lagos State
governor committed his time, energy and resources to the emergence of
Buhari as president.
A statement by the party’s Director of
Publicity, Research and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi, on Tuesday, said that
the victory occasioned by Tinubu’s support was unparalleled in the
history of the country.
The statement said, “‘But for the
strategic masterstroke of Tinubu’s effort and political influence, a
sitting Federal Government would never be removed through a free and
fair election.
“His contribution in making Muhammadu Buhari president today is unparalleled in the history of political alliances in Nigeria.”

Rihanna tops charts and speaks on Beyoncé 'feud'
Rihanna is putting in "Work, work, work, work, work."
The
singer's "Anti" album has returned to the top of the Billboard 200
chart, and she's speaking out on rumors that she has an ongoing feud
with fellow superstar Beyoncé.
Nonsense, Rihanna told Vogue.
"Here's the deal," Rihanna said. "They
just get so excited to feast on something that's negative. Something
that's competitive. Something that's, you know, a rivalry. And that's
just not what I wake up to. Because I can only do me. And nobody else is
going to be able to do that."
The
singer, who graces the cover of the magazine's April issue, said she is
very much bored with music's pop formula. With her new album, "I just
gravitated toward the songs that were honest to where I'm at right now,"
she said.
The strategy appears to be working, as Billboard reports that "Anti" is Rihanna's second No. 1 album and the first to spend more than a week at No. 1.
Rihanna is currently on tour to support the album, and a fan recently shocked her with his vocal skills.
The
singer extended her mic to Terah Stewart at her concert in Cincinnati
on Saturday and got quite the surprise when he perfectly sang a bit of
her song "FourFiveSeconds." She responded, "Oh, s**t."
Stewart, a long time fan of the singer's, tweeted after the performance, "Seriously @rihanna, I love you. Endlessly."
Chinese woman writes four books with her toes
Sun Lukang has written four books with her toes.
Born
prematurely with cerebral palsy and unable to use her arms, she started
writing Chinese characters with her feet at age 7, and switched to
typing in 2002 when her parents bought her a computer.
"It was really difficult to write with my feet at the beginning; the pen would always slip through my toes," she says.
"But
I was eager to do it well. I kept practicing until I got blisters. I
finally got the hang of it after three months of practice."
Over
the past 10 years, she has published four books and written more than
two million words in various genres, including poetry and essays. The
books are sold in local bookstores in the coastal city of Qingdao in China, where she lives.
The 25-year-old told CNN her passion for literature started when she was in elementary school.
"It's a great pleasure to be able to turn what I've been through and what I've seen into writing."
Sun also uses her feet for other daily tasks -- eating with chopsticks, brushing her hair and using her smartphone.
Newly wed
Sun's doctor parents decided she should drop out of school when she finished primary education due to health reasons.
Although
reluctant, Sun obeyed. She says she had since been focusing on writing
at home, and taught herself to do so at college level.
Sun says the difficulties never stopped her from trying to inspire her readers through writing.
She attributes her optimistic view of life to her parents.
"My
parents has long ago implanted the idea that I could do anything as
others do, and even better. I've never thought myself any different than
other people—I'm even more normal than normal people."
Sun got married in February. She says she is grateful for her husband's support of her career.
A freelance writer, Sun says her goal is to establish a media company in her hometown.
"I want to help ordinary people realize their publication dream."
Rapper Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest dies at 45
Rapper
Malik Taylor, better known to fans as Phife Dawg of the group A Tribe
Called Quest, died Tuesday of complications from diabetes, according to a
statement from his family and manager. He was 45.
Taylor
had long suffered from health issues associated with his having Type 1
diabetes. In 2008, he underwent a kidney transplant.
"Malik
was our loving husband, father, brother and friend," the statement
read. "We love him dearly. How he impacted all our lives will never be
forgotten. His love for music and sports was only surpassed by his love
of God and family."
Born in the
Jamaica area of Queens in New York City, he became childhood friends
with future group mate Q-Tip. The pair met at the age of 2 in church and
would eventually become a part of A Tribe Called Quest, which was
formed in 1985 with classmate Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
Their
1990 debut album "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm"
featured the single "Can I Kick It" and Taylor's high-pitched voice
became a distinctive part of their sound. Their sophomore album, "The
Low End Theory," spurred the hit "Check the Rhime" which included the
now iconic call and response "You on point Phife/All the time Tip."
Taylor told Rolling Stone in 2015 that he was not even originally supposed to be part of the group, having appeared on the first album as a featured guest.
"Me
and (Tribe member Jarobi) were supposed to do our own group," Taylor
said. "A Tribe Called Quest was really (members) Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed
Muhammad, and they were going to put us out there. I was really a
support thing for Tip and Ali."
Tribe
would go on to release five albums and become one of the most respected
groups in hip hop. Taylor said in the Rolling Stone interview that he
was shocked by their success.
"I never expected it to be this big," he said. "I just thought we were going to be celebs in the hood."
Infighting
led to a split in 1998 and both Phife and Q-Tip launched solo careers
with the latter's being more successful than the former. The 2011
documentary "Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called
Quest" was directed by actor Michael Rapaport and traced the group's
influence as well as its eventual disbanding.
"Myself,
Kanye (West), we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Tribe's album,"
music impresario Pharrell Williams says in the trailer for the film.
The group reunited in 2008 for a series of concerts and announced in 2013 that they would no longer be performing together.
Taylor's death was mourned on social media by both fans and the famous.
In 2015, Tribe celebrated
the 25th anniversary of its debut album by releasing a commemorative
issue of "People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm," which
featured remixes from artists J. Cole, Pharrell, and Cee-Lo Green. Group
members also appeared on Jimmy Fallon's late night show to perform in support of the album
Beyoncé controversy is bigger than you think
Beyoncé is certainly not the first celebrity to cause a stir by inserting race into her art, but there's a reason why her recent actions are resonating.
Quite simply, she is one of those stars of color who -- until now -- has been beyond race for the mainstream audience.
That
was the basis of a recent "Saturday Night Live" skit that portrayed
white fans freaking out about her "blackness," as conveyed by her new
"Formation" music video and a Super Bowl halftime performance in which
her backup dancers dressed in Black Panther-esque outfits.
The halftime show has prompted a number of discussions both pro- and anti-Beyoncé.
Nation
of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan backed the superstar during a sermon
Sunday. Fans rallied around the singer on social media, and a protest at
National Football League headquarters in New York ended up drawing
only Beyoncé supporters.
However,
police have argued that the imagery in the music video is anti-law
enforcement, and her apparent tribute to the Black Panthers fell just as
flat, given that group's history of tensions with authorities.
Departments
across the country have been discussing symbolic stands against the
singer, whose video also featured imagery closely aligned with the
#BlackLivesMatters movement. One scene in the "Formation" video features
a young African-American boy in a hoodie dancing in front of a line of
police officers wearing riot gear; then, the words "Stop Shooting Us"
appear in graffiti on a wall.
A police union in Raleigh, North Carolina, voted unanimously Tuesday night not to boycott off-duty security work for her upcoming show there.
The superstar's stadium tour kicks off April 27 in Miami, and the Miami Fraternal Order of Police has urged a boycott there.
In a statement posted on the group's website, Tampa
Police Benevolent Association President Vincent Gericitano said his
group's officers were "disgusted" with the Super Bowl show and Beyoncé's
new music video.
The Nashville Fraternal Order of Police asked its members to not voluntarily work the concert there.
"If
we volunteer to work her event, we're basically saying, 'you can say or
do anything you want to when it comes to police officers, and we're
just going to sit and take it,' " Sgt. Danny Hale, president of the Nashville Fraternal Order of Police, Andrew Jackson Lodge No. 5, told The Tennessean.
"We've been under attack for the past eight, 10, 12 months. Some things
that are done and said are just not fair, and it's not right."
Authorities
have been clear that they are not calling for officers to not do their
jobs, just to reconsider working security for her shows, as some
off-duty officers have done to make extra money.
"I
can guarantee that if Beyoncé needs help anywhere, police would
respond," said Sgt. Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent
Association in New York. "She made a statement, and now law enforcement
is making a statement. What's clear is that no one in the country is
trying to resolve the issues between communities of color and the
distrust of law enforcement."
Not everyone is backing officers who have called for the Beyoncé boycott, however.
One
person tweeted, "The American police are bullying Beyoncé because she
asked for police not to murder black people, please and thank you."
The
National Sheriffs' Association linked Beyoncé's "anti-police
'entertainment' " performance to the "senseless killing of seven
deputies in the U.S. since the (Super Bowl halftime performance)
aired." A sheriff in Tennessee said after shots were fired outside his
home that Beyoncé's video may have provoked the incident.
But New York Daily News columnist Shaun King wrote Monday that the officers' killings were not about race.
"The
facts are seven of eight officers who've been killed this year in the
United States have been killed by angry, armed white men," King wrote.
The controversy has not hurt Beyoncé's ticket sales, however.
Billboard reports
that the 39-date tour "has already taken in over $100 million in ticket
sales, with Beyoncé inevitably headed toward a sold-out run and one of
the hottest tours of 2016."
"Even
Taylor Swift, whose 1989 tour last year topped all artists at $250
million gross and 2.3 million attendance to 83 shows, according to
Boxscore, did not play stadiums exclusively. In fact, only one act, The
Rolling Stones, played all stadiums in 2016, and only Coldplay has
joined Beyoncé in rolling out a full-on stadium tour for 2016 -- so
far," Billboard said.
Madonna exposes fan's breast onstage during concert
For pop provocateur Madonna, it's no longer enough to flash some nudity. She's now exposing other people's body parts, too.
The
singer startled audience members by inviting a 17-year-old fan onstage
during her concert Thursday night in Brisbane, Australia, and then
tugging down the teen's corset top to briefly reveal her left breast.
"She's
the kind of girl you just want to slap on the a** -- and pull," Madonna
told the crowd before exposing the young fan. "Sorry ... sexual
harassment. You can do the same to me. Good luck."
In videos posted online, the teenager appeared unfazed by the wardrobe malfunction and hugged Madonna seconds later. Afterward, she told Australian media that the episode was no big deal to her: "It was, seriously, nothing. I didn't think of it until everyone totally freaked out about it."
But some observers criticized the incident.
"Madonna
is in total meltdown. She needs to cancel this tour asap," said TV
journalist Piers Morgan, a former CNN host, on Twitter.
Other Twitter users wondered
how people would react if Madonna were a male performer, and questioned
whether what the singer did was a criminal act.
What Madonna did was disgusting and if it was a man that did that they'd be prosecuted so why should she get away with it?— mєgan martinૐ (@__MeganMartinnx) March 18, 2016
The 57-year-old pop icon, who has long cultivated a brazenly sexual persona, has not commented on criticism of the incident.
It's the latest in a rash of erratic behavior by the Material Girl on her Rebel Heart tour,
which wraps up Sunday in Sydney. She has begun concerts several hours
late, spewed profanity onstage and made vulgar comments about ex-husband
Guy Ritchie, with whom she is locked in a bitter battle over custody of their son Rocco, 15.
In
recent months, the teen has been living in London with his father.
Judging by some of Madonna's recent comments, being apart from her son
has been hard for her.
"There's no love stronger than a mother for her son, and if I talk about him too much, I'm going to cry," the singer told the crowd this month during a concert in New Zealand, her voice cracking. "I hope he hears this somewhere and he knows how much I miss him."
34 killed in Brussels terror attacks
Four days after Salah Abdesalam, the
most wanted suspect in the November 13, Paris attacks that killed 130
persons was arrested in Brussels, Belgium, three explosions hit the
country’s airport and metro station on Tuesday, killing no fewer than 34
people.
At least 230 others sustained injuries
in the attacks, which the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria has claimed
responsibility, according to the AMAQ News Agency.
This came as President Muhammadu Buhari
and his United States counterpart, Barack Obama, called for
international cooperation to fight terrorism.
The AMAQ news agency said,
“Islamic State fighters carried out a series of bombings with explosive
belts and devices on Tuesday, targeting the airport and the metro
station in the centre of the Belgian capital Brussels.”
Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Michel, had told reporters, “We feared terrorist attacks, and that has now happened.”
Belgian federal Prosecutor, Frederic Van
Leeuw, on Tuesday, also said that it was too soon to know exactly how
many people died in the bombings.
According to CNN, Belgian state broadcaster, RTBF, citing emergency services, reported 20 dead at the Maelbeek metro station and 14 more killed at Brussels’ international airport.
After the explosions, Belgian
authorities hit the streets looking for those responsible for the
carnage and who might launch more attacks.
Reuters reports that a witness
said he heard shouts in Arabic and shots shortly before two explosions
struck the packed airport departure lounge.
Van Leeuw said a suicide bomber probably triggered one of the explosions.
Meanwhile, Buhari, on Tuesday, joined world leaders in condemning the attacks.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on
Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President commiserated with
Prime Minister Charles Michel and Belgians over the loss of lives in the
attacks.
The
statement read in part, “President Buhari believes that the appalling
attack on Brussels reinforces the need for greater international
cooperation to effectively confront and destroy global terrorism and its
perpetrators.
“The President assures the global
community that under his leadership, Nigeria will continue to work with
other countries to ensure that terrorism never triumphs over free,
peaceful and law-abiding nations and people of the world.
“He wishes the more than 100 persons injured in the attacks a speedy recovery.”
Also, Obama, who spoke in Cuba, said there was need for international cooperation to fight terrorism.
Obama said, “We must be together
regardless of nationality or race or faith in fighting against the
scourge of terrorism. We can and we will defeat those who threaten the
safety and security of people all around the world.”

2016 UTME: Another harvest of errors March 22, 2016
FOR the second year running, the Joint
Admissions and Matriculation Board has demonstrated an apparent lack of
capacity in conducting the computer-based test for the 2016 Unified
Tertiary Matriculation Examination. The hitches recorded and candidates’
lamentations will compel any discernible person to query its adoption
when the infrastructure for its success is grossly inadequate.
Reports of internet failure, computer
glitches, power outages, incompatible questions and answers, difficulty
in down-loading question papers, computers without mouse or with
keyboard problems, posting of candidates outside the state they
registered for the examination were rampant; as was the case in 2015.
But most unusual were the 40 marks awarded to some candidates extremely
handicapped by these difficulties, and the double results JAMB issued in
some cases. That marks were arbitrarily awarded was an admission of
grave error, and it raises integrity questions on this year’s exam.
The exam, which began on February 27 in
521 centres across the country, ended on March 19. The Minister of
Education, Adamu Adamu, who was at one of the centres in Abuja on an
inspection visit, expressed concern about the plight of candidates who
had not been accustomed to using a computer. He said, “I have sympathy
for candidates who are not computer-literate and there are many of them.
I think we should combine CBT with paper examination for sometime but
definitely, the future is for computer.” Absolutely!
Many candidates and their parents share
the minister’s concern, too. A distraught mother to a candidate –
Tobiloba, who sat the exam at MTI College, Surulere, Lagos – is seeking
another test for her daughter because she believed that her daughter is
brilliant, and could easily have passed the examination, but for the
challenges she did not create that day. Her computer tripped off
repeatedly during the test. She logged in and saw mathematics, chemistry
and physics papers complete. But when the computer tripped off again, a
second log-in showed as follows: mathematics 46, chemistry 25 and
physics 25 questions, instead of 50 each.
Desmond Peters, another parent, posits,
“It is obvious that we are not ripe for this technology yet.” The JAMB
Registrar, Dibu Ojerinde, will be hard put to dispute this assertion.
Although the CBT mode was fully introduced last year to address the
challenges posed by the paper-pencil method, its release of results
within 24 hours and serving as an effective bulwark against cheating are
not sufficient grounds for the board to overlook the inherent mounting
obstacles or complaints thereto. This is why the House of
Representatives on Thursday advised the Federal Ministry of Education to
direct JAMB to return to the old system or alternatively, make it
optional. Earlier, some candidates had protested in Lagos, demanding the
cancellation of this year’s test, following the lapses that attended
it.
Apart from a few elite schools, the
majority of which are privately owned, computer education in secondary
schools in the country is a non-starter. This was attested to last year
by one of the teachers who participated in the national competition for
the Teacher of the Year Award. He told the interview panel chaired by
Pat Utomi, “In my school, we teach computer on chalkboard.” Such schools
are aplenty; even more are colleges where students have neither
theoretical nor practical knowledge of computer. Yet, these schools
present candidates for the CBT.
It is this category of UTME candidates
that rush to learn how to fiddle with computer keyboards at cybercafés
just to sit the examination. They leave the exam halls with forlorn
faces, terribly upset and conscious of the fact that they did not
perform well, not because they are not intelligent, but because the
system failed them. This has gone on for two years, denying admissions
to otherwise brilliant youths, whose future is jeopardised in the
process. This cannot continue.
The minister should, therefore,
demonstrate that his sympathy for this group of candidates is real by
ensuring that CBT is made optional in the 2017 edition. It will reduce
the degree of failure orchestrated by hitches; and narrow the chances of
a candidate from Lagos being given a centre in Warri, or candidate,
like Juwon Medaiyese, from Ilorin going to Minna to sit the test. A
level playing field has to be created for all the candidates, otherwise,
JAMB will largely be seen as fleecing the candidates and their parents
annually.
It should be acknowledged, however, that
the board meant well by introducing the CBT, as it aligns with
modernity and advances the frontiers of Information Communication
Technology education. But the bitter truth is that there is a mismatch
between the present level of our education and the computer literacy
culture being imposed on it.
What’s more; Nigeria is ravaged by
infrastructure deficits like gross inadequacy in electricity supply,
broadband penetration and alternative source of power. As the UTME
lasted, power supply nationwide dipped to 3,449.53 megawatts for a
country of about 170 million people, according to statistics from the
Ministry of Power. Progress will remain a mirage with the UTME’s CBT if
the country does not get these indices right.
Many universities, which had for long
passed a vote-of-no-confidence in JAMB’s UTME with their conduct of
post-UTME tests to select their students, will be reinforced by this
year’s CBT short-comings to deepen the process. Globally, any university
worth its name admits its own students; we believe it is the right way
to go. It will guarantee quality and autonomy badly needed in our
universities.
Rapists strangle UTME candidate, dump corpse inside bush
Parents of 20-year-old Joan Egemba, have
been thrown into mourning after their daughter was stabbed and
strangled by some suspected rapists in the Ijebu Igbo area of Ogun
State.
Joan, who bagged a National Diploma in
Accountancy from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, enrolled
for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the
deceased left her home in the Odo Eran, Sango-Ota area around 12pm on
Thursday, March 3, for the National Open University of Nigeria centre in
Awa Ijebu, where she was posted to sit for the exam the following day.
It was learnt that on Thursday evening,
she was abducted at the Ijebu Oru Junction – a few distance away from
the centre – by persons suspected to be rapists.
Her corpse was said to be found in a bush at the back of a secondary school in Ijebu Igbo with cuts in her thighs.
Our correspondent was told that the briefs that Egemba wore were torn, suggesting that her assailants were rapists.
Her father, Emmanuel Egemba, said she
had called him on the telephone on getting to the centre, informing him
that the security guard attached to the centre turned down her request
to pass the night on the premises.
He said, “On that Thursday, she left
home around 12.30pm, but the bus she boarded at Sango to the centre left
around 2pm. She called at 5.30pm that she had arrived there, but the
security man at the centre did not open the gate for her and others to
pass the night on the premises. I told her to find a place in the area
till the following day when she would sit for the exam.
“Around 7pm, I called her again and she
said the security man had opened the gate for them. One hour after, I
called again but she did not pick her calls. She was supposed to sit for
the exam at 6.30am on Friday. I called her around 12pm on Friday, her
phone was switched off. As early as 4am on Saturday, I went to the
centre to verify whether she sat for the exam or not. I met the security
man and he directed me to the JAMB office in Abeokuta. He denied that
he allowed my daughter into the school compound to pass the night.
“It was a woman that told us that a girl
was kidnapped at Oru Junction and taken towards Ijebu Igbo. We later
discovered her corpse on Wednesday, March 9. If the candidates were
allowed to sleep inside the school, this incident would not have
happened.”
Emmanuel, a retired Assistant
Superintendent of Nigerian Customs, said the loss of his daughter was
hard to bear, but the family had taken solace in God.
“I learnt it was rapists that killed
her. Her body was not mutilated, but she had cuts in the mouth and
thighs. Her clothes and briefs were torn and she had bruises in the
back.
“We prayed before she left home on that
day. While we were praying this morning (Monday) I looked at where she
used to sit and it was vacant,” he said.
He stated that the deceased’s mother, Mrs. Chimemo Egemba, was too distraught and could not speak with PUNCH Metro.
A neigbour, who identified himself only
as Wale, said the Divisional Police Officer in Awa Ijebu did not act
promptly when the case was reported and called for comprehensive
investigation to unravel Joan’s killers.
He said, “I followed Emmanuel to the
police station on Wednesday, four days after he reported the case, and I
asked the DPO if he had visited the school. He said no. He should have
gone to the centre instantly to investigate. He is not fit to be a
policeman.
“It was at a building beside the NOUN
centre that we got the information that the girl was abducted. We traced
her to Ijebu Igbo with her picture. At a motor park there, we showed
the picture to a man who told us her corpse was dumped in a bush at the
back of a school.
“I think she struggled with her
abductors while they attempted to rape her. I think they strangled her
when they did not succeed in raping her. We want those that perpetrate
this act to be fished out and brought to book.”
Wale said a police officer at the Ijebu
Igbo division told him that they were overwhelmed by the spate of crime
in the community, adding that many policemen had influenced their
transfers from Ijebu Igbo to other stations.
The Ogun State Police spokesperson, DSP
Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command was working with its Information and
Communication Technology experts to track down the suspects.
He said, “We are working on the information we have to get the culprits.
“Investigation is still ongoing and we are contacting our ICT experts on how we can track down the culprits.”
